The Phoenix Steering Control System
The Phoenix Steering Control System (Trucks) is available for bus, coach, prime movers and rigid vehicle installation. You can test drive this system here.
The system has been developed to:
To conform to EEC requirements the system will Fail Safe. Should there be an electric or hydraulic failure the axle will lock in the ahead condition. The driver can switch the system on or off at will and at all times will be aware of the position of the axle.
The system is speed controlled, normally at 40kph but this can be adjusted if required. It has been technically proven that automatically locking the axle above a pre-determined road speed contributes to the stability of the vehicle.
The axle when lifted does not steer.
As with most steering control systems, to conform to EEC guide lines the system contains a second hydraulic pump, which is electrically driven but only when required. This means that should the front axle steering system fail, the auxiliary system will steer or vice versa.
By mounting an electric motor it is not necessary to interfere with the existing system on the vehicle. The Phoenix system ensures that there is no interference with the vehicle engine or transmission. With some 0.E. steered installations a second pump is mounted on the gearbox to ensure adequate supply of hydraulic oil to the second steer when the vehicle is moving. With some designs a new pump is mounted on the engine and is constantly driven.
The Phoenix system is an independent system and is not pressurised when the Vehicle is travelling and the steering is not in use. In this situation the axle is locked in the central position hydraulically. Special Feature: When the system is installed as a second steer the central locking is optional.

The Phoenix range of axles and suspensions are designed for easy installation to trucks, buses and trailers and includes the unique SKL Axle, suitable for twin or single wheels and rigid or steer application. It is designed to solve the technical problems brought about by vehicle design constraints in worldwide markets.
The computer generated impression shows the standard lower flat section that ensures adequate clearance under the most arduous conditions, of the prop shaft and chassis mounted components.
Shaped axles as shown are available from the Phoenix Truck & Trailer range with suspensions and brakes and can be viewed in that web site.
The SKL axle is a new design to supercede the SK Axle (which is still available but not in the UK). The SKL Axle is available as a fixed and steer axle with drum or disc brakes, and is designed to give greater clearance with offset drive lines.
